Theory of Ice (2021) is a powerful act of world-building and creative sovereignty by Michi Saagig Nishnaabeg writer, scholar, and musician Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, who has been widely recognized as one of the most compelling Indigenous voices of her generation.

During this evening, Leanne together with Nick Ferrio on guitar, will share her musical storytelling in conversation with climate justice activist and film maker Chihiro Geuzebroek. The album departs from Leanne’s poetic inquiries into our relationship with water, and her cover of Willie Dunn’s “I Pity the Country”.

Leanne Betasamosake Simpson is the author of eight previous books, including As We Have Always Done (2017) and Dancing on Our Turtle’s Back.  Her novel Noopiming: The Cure for White Ladies, which was short-listed for the Dublin Literary Prize and the Governor General’s prize for fiction. Her latest project in collaboration with Robyn Maynard, Rehearsals for Living was short-listed for the Governor Generals prize for non-fiction and is a national best seller. Leanne’s album Theory of Ice was short- listed for the Polaris Prize and she was the recipient of the Prism Prize’s Willie Dunn award for innovation in video production.

Nick Ferrio, hailing from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, is a versatile musician recognized for his talents as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist. Collaborating with esteemed artists such as Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, he has contributed his songwriting prowess and musical skills to various projects both in Canada and internationally. Ferrio's rich musical journey encompasses co-writing, recording, and captivating live performances that have left an indelible mark on audiences worldwide.

Chihiro Geuzebroek is Bolivian Dutch of Quechua ancestry activist and artist. She is the director producer of the climate justice documentary Radical Friends(2013) and (co)produced three poetry shows centering storytelling of women of color connecting to ancestry, environmental activism and diasporic artists dedicated to landdefending; Re-member. Chihiro has been focused on climate justice since 2003 and organizing since 2009 participating in direct action grassroots activist campaigns in the Netherlands and abroad. In recent years she is known for her protestsongs such as Shell Must Fall and How does it feel(Palestine) and performing with Arawak/Dutch singersongwriter Jeike Meijer with the show Activist Songversation. In 2020 Chihiro co-founded the foundation Aralez dedicated to deepening and strengthening decolonial analysis, practice and coalition building. In 2021 and 2022 she worked with Mia Tengco on Indigenous Dreams expo (I and II) which was part of Indigenous Liberation program and shown in multiple venues.
